La Batalla de Puebla del 5 de mayo de 1862 tiene un enorme valor simbólico y político para Estados Unidos, pues evitó la expansión de las monarquías europeas en América y representó el comienzo del establecimiento de la Doctrina Monroe.
"Para los gobiernos demócratas y republicanos de Estados Unidos recuperar el 5 de Mayo tiene un significado ideológico muy importante, pues significa la victoria de la Doctrina Monroe en el continente", explicó el historiador mexicano Humberto Morales.
En una conferencia en la Sociedad de las Américas, en Nueva York, el catedrático de la Benemérita Universidad de Puebla (BUAP), indicó que el triunfo de México sobre las fuerzas invasoras francesas representó el triunfo de la idea de la República sobre la monarquía.
"Fue la bandera militar con la cual América erradica para siempre la monarquía en el continente, algo que los estadounidenses no pudieron hacer con los británicos de manera simbólica", sostuvo Morales.
La Doctrina Monroe, que se sintetiza en la frase "América para los americanos", fue creada en 1823 en Estados Unidos con la intención de rechazar cualquier interferencia o intromisión externa en el continente americano.
El 5 de mayo de 1862, tropas mexicanas, encabezadas por el general Ignacio Zaragoza, derrotaron al ejército francés en la batalla que se desarrolló en el central estado de Puebla.
